Vale of Glamorgan Brass band to play in Italian Gardens

by David Jones

Vale of Glamorgan Brass Band will perform at Penarth’s Italian Gardens on Saturday, July 4, from 2pm to 4pm, thanks to the efforts of Friends of the Italian Gardens.

The concert is free to attend.

The Italian Gardens date back to 1926 and were designed by Ursula Thompson, the first woman to graduate from Kew Gardens.

Also known as Beach Rock Gardens or Promenade Garden, the site features a rock garden layout and Edwardian-style planting, with structural elements largely unchanged since it was first built.

The park is listed as Grade II by Cadw and remains open to the public 24 hours a day.

Modern changes to the garden include railings installed in 1994.

A plaque within the gardens was unveiled by the Princess of Wales, as shown in a photograph previously published by the Penarth Times.

A raised well with ornamental ironwork sits just inside the southerly entrance to the park and has since been filled with soil and flowering plants.

The concert will take place outdoors, and donations will be accepted to support the gardens.
