An additional £1 million in funding has been allocated by the Welsh Government to boost emergency food aid, bringing total investment this year to £3.44 million.
Jane Hutt, cabinet secretary for social justice, said: “The cost of living continues to put pressure on many households across Wales, and the war in the Middle East potentially may drive up prices, adding to the anxiety many people already feel about putting food on the table, paying their bills and heating their homes.
“Supporting people through these pressures is a priority for us, and we are doing all we can to help those who need support.”
The funding will help food banks and community organisations purchase, store, and distribute food, including surplus supplies that might otherwise go to waste.
Ms Hutt said: “This additional £1 million will help community organisations and food banks reach more people, as part of the wider work we are undertaking to tackle poverty.”
The support comes alongside wider efforts to tackle household hardship.
Between 2022 and 2026, the Welsh Government has invested more than £7 billion to ease financial pressures, maximise incomes, and help families retain more of their earnings.
Through the ‘Claim What’s Yours’ campaign, which signposts people to Advicelink Cymru for free and confidential assistance, more than £10.5 million has been returned to individuals since 2020.
The advice line helps people access unclaimed benefits, pensions, support with care costs, and council tax reductions.
Ms Hutt said: “Whether you are struggling with daily expenses, managing debt, or unsure what help is available, Advicelink Cymru is there to help you claim the support you are entitled to.”

To combat fuel poverty, the Welsh Government invests more than £30 million annually in the Warm Homes Nest scheme.
This scheme provides free energy efficiency upgrades to low-income households across Wales.
