The scheme has been introduced to give a boost to the town centre
A Welsh council has announced it will introduce a ‘pay what you can’ parking scheme. Welshpool Town Council is trailing the scheme at one of its car parks in an effort to support local businesses.
The ‘pay what you can’ parking will see parking charges covered by the council meaning visitors will not have to pay at the machines. Instead people will be invited to make a voluntary contribution if they wish to help support the initiative.
The scheme will start at Easter, on Saturday, April 4, and will run every Saturday until September 26 at Church Street car park. Make sure you never miss Wales’ biggest updates by getting our daily newsletter.
The initiative has been introduced as a 26-week trial designed to support local businesses, encourage more visitors into town, and “make Welshpool a more welcoming place to spend time”.
It follows a trial of free parking during the festive period, which the council said received strong feedback from local businesses.
A recent survey of traders found most reported increased customers, longer visits to the town centre, and a more vibrant atmosphere during the trial days.
Throughout the six-month period the council will monitor car park usage, business feedback, and visitor responses before deciding whether to continue or adapt the scheme in the future.
Visitors are encouraged to look out for the signs next to the pay machines for more information or visit the Welshpool Town Council website.
