‘What or who will we think about on Father’s Day?’

by David Jones

The sentiments of Father’s Day are that we celebrate everything good about our dads. Their love, their dependability, their strong advice and, in some but not all cases, their practical help and skills.

When we are growing up our dads will retain those precious memories of what we were like when we were younger and as you might imagine, there are many funny quotes from all sorts of people about fatherhood in general. Jerry Lewis the well known American comedian said: “When I was a kid, I said to my father one afternoon, ‘Daddy, will you take me to the zoo?’ He answered, “If the zoo wants you, let them come and get you.”

An anonymous quote says: “There should be a children’s song: ‘If you’re happy and you know it, keep it to yourself and let daddy sleep.’’

But here is a serious point to this missive. Father’s Day is when we express just how much we love and admire our dads. By their very nature, dads will have had to have worked all the time when we were younger by necessity. For others our dads may have left us when we were younger and others, we may not even know who our dad is.

Dads are human and we will all, and as a dad I include myself in this, make mistakes from time to time. There is however one father who has never and will never make a mistake and that is our heavenly father God.

The bible says of fathers in Ephesians six and verse four: “And now a word to you parents. Don’t keep on scolding and nagging your children, making them angry and resentful. Rather, bring them up with the loving discipline the Lord himself approves, with suggestions and godly advice.” (TLB)

Also, in the old testament in the book of Deuteronomy six and verses six to seven we read: “And you must think constantly about these commandments I am giving you today. You must teach them to your children and talk about them when you are at home or out for a walk; at bedtime and the first thing in the morning.”

What or who will we think about this Father’s Day? It is important.
