The Vale of Glamorgan Council announced the soft plastics recycling scheme, introduced in areas including Penarth, Dinas Powys, and Sully, a success, with the scheme currently in the process of being rolled out across the Vale.
Launched last year, the pilot allows residents to recycle items like plastic bags and wrapping – materials not traditionally accepted in kerbside collections.
However one unhappy resident, who was a huge supporter of the scheme, has found it very frustrating in recent months, having used up all her blue bags and being unable to find anymore.
Millie Golden said: “I love recycling. It’s one of my most favourite things to do and when I realised you could also recycle plastic wrappers – which there seem to be so many of – it was such a treat!
“But I have used up all my blue bags and have not had a refill for weeks. I walked to my local library, went in there to pick up some more and they said they didn’t have any and the bags are being delivered.
“Then I sat at my front doot and waited for my local binmen and asked them, and they said I needed to go to the library to get them. At this stage I was going barking mad.”
Colin Smith, Head of Neighbourhood Services for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “We’re currently delivering new rolls of blue bags to households in Penarth and surrounding areas, following the expansion of the soft plastics recycling scheme beyond its initial trial period.
“Each household will receive a full year’s supply, and we’re also restocking local libraries so residents can easily pick up extra bags if needed.
“Deliveries are well underway and will be completed by the end of April. We’d like to thank residents for their patience while this important work is carried out.”
