This month, Buzz is launching Support Local – examining the realities facing Wales’s independent cultural and hospitality sectors, and exploring how we, collectively, can help sustain them.
From Cardiff to Caernarfon, Swansea to Wrexham, Wales’ cultural life is powered by independents. From small venues to coastal cafés, theatres, galleries, bars, bookshops and promoters – this is what gives Welsh communities character.
Across the country, though, independent businesses are navigating relentless pressure from rising energy costs, increasing overheads, staffing shortages and tightening margins. Since the pandemic, hospitality numbers across the UK have fallen sharply, and Welsh operators have felt that impact acutely. Rate relief has offered some short-term support, but structural challenges remain for many businesses.
The creative industries contribute more than £1.5 billion annually to the Welsh economy; support tens of thousands of jobs; bring footfall to market towns; nurture artists who go on to national and international stages; showcase Welsh produce; and provide platforms for local voices, in English and Welsh. Culture is economic infrastructure, and social infrastructure.

Buzz is an independent Welsh publication: not funded by a parent company or national media group, we’re reliant on partnerships with the sectors we cover. Tightened marketing budgets impact platforms like ours, and when independent media loses revenue, the sector loses visibility.
We’ll begin in our April issue with a closer look at grassroots venues and independent promoters, because they sit at the heart of Welsh cultural identity. Unlike major arena tours with dynamic ticket pricing, grassroots venues operate on extremely slim margins, often 2% or less. They can’t simply raise ticket prices to cover every rising cost. Their survival depends on the community.
How, then, to best turn appreciation into action within Wales? First: choose local, and do so regularly. Book tickets in advance (early bookings help businesses manage cashflow and programme with confidence); favour independent cafés instead of defaulting to chains.
“Wales has such a rich history of great music, venues and crowds, it really needs to be nurtured and kept alive. It needs support from everyone – the government, councils, local communities and the general public. If you ask any big artist where they started and how, it’s always somewhere small, and local to them, so it goes without saying, if you can, go support and get out to see local bands and artists in the smaller venues.“

Second: engage. In today’s media landscape, attention is currency. Reading Welsh publications, sharing features, tagging venues, using offers and clicking through to events all demonstrate measurable value. That data helps secure advertising and sponsorship, which in turn funds more coverage of Welsh culture.
Third: collaborate locally. Support Local will spotlight Welsh venues, operators and creatives, highlighting positive models alongside challenges. When advertisers back local media, they support an interconnected network of businesses rather than a distant platform.
Beyond economics, this is about identity. Independent businesses define the personality of Welsh towns and cities, keeping high streets distinctive rather than interchangeable. Supporting Welsh culture doesn’t require sweeping gestures. It’s everyday decisions: buying the ticket, staying for another drink at a local bar, attending the exhibition, subscribing to independent media, collaborating across sectors.

Buzz is committed to doing its part. We’ll continue telling Wales’ cultural story, connecting audiences with independents and creating visibility for those who shape our towns and cities. If we value vibrant Welsh places, supporting the businesses and platforms that sustain them is essential.
If you are an independent that we don’t work with, get in touch, if you want to champion your local cafe, live music venue, let us know about it. Drop us an email on [email protected], or connect on our social media (buzzmagwales on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter). We want to hear from you.
