Yard Act blend their trademark sound with some unexpected turns

YARD ACT

You’re Gonna Need A Little Music (Island)

Since forming in Leeds in 2019, Yard Act have carved out a career in talk-sung art-rock, evolving as their growing popularity has pulled them towards the mainstream. That makes their third album an intriguing listen. From the off, James Smith’s trademark snarling delivery hits home on Empty Pledges, tackling his self-doubt head on and challenging the listener to “either shut up and listen, or switch this shit off!

As expected, there’s pithy, thought-provoking social commentary laced with humour throughout. The more radio-friendly single New Beginnings bounces along, while the skippy indie-dance of the title track nods knowingly towards Pulp.

However, it’s when they venture beyond their established formula that the album really stands out. For example, Janey Said is a surprisingly moving ballad – think The Fall’s Bill Is Dead – which exposes vulnerability in a meeting with an old flame. Take Yard Act’s challenge, give this album a listen, and you might be surprised.
