We are excited to announce the first of three planned ‘Have Your Say’ events for this year. Join us on Thursday, March 20th, from 2pm to 4pm at Dinas Powys Library and Activity Centre, located at Fair Oaks, Dinas Powys, CF64 4QU.

 

The event will be an opportunity to learn more about the Forum, have your say on important matters that affect over fifties and find out what support and activities are available in your community to help you live and age well.

 

We will be joined by the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales team, Age Friendly Vale and the Vale Council’s Healthy Living Officer, aswell as local community groups such as Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern, The Dwelling Place, Gentle Years Yoga and the library’s resident scrabble group.

 

Free refreshments, fruit and biscuits will be on offer in the Centre’s café for all to enjoy.

 

Accessibility: Access to the building is via automatic doors. The library is on one level and there is a low level counter with a hearing loop.

Recruitment of COPA Chair

Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS)

As you may be aware, the radio signal that controls Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters is being switched off as of 30 June 2025.The technology that facilitates the RTS signal was introduced in the 1980s and has reached the end of its natural operational life. This means that those customers who still use an RTS meter will need to arrange an upgrade with their supplier. 

What areas are impacted by RTS meters?

There are RTS meters in every constituency across Great Britian that require replacing. These meters can be found in domestic, non-domestic and public buildings.  Once the signal is switched off anyone who still has a meter that uses the RTS signal could experience a disruption to their heating and hot water.  

 

Why does RTS matter?

When the RTS switch-off happens any customer who has not had their RTS meter changed ahead of time may lose access to their heating and hot water, while others may find their heating and hot water constantly on. Both scenarios are potentially serious, particularly for vulnerable consumers or those concerned with keeping close control over their energy bill. It is also important to note most consumers impacted will not know that they have an RTS meter, this campaign therefore aims to raise awareness of the RTS switch-off and facilitate the transition for consumers ahead of June 2025.  

 

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

If you’re not sure whether you have an RTS meter, there are a few things you can look out for: 

·       There may be a separate switch box near your meter with a radio teleswitch label on it. 

·       Your property is heated using electricity or storage heaters. 

·       There’s no gas supply in your area. This includes households in rural areas and high-rise flats. 

·       You get cheaper energy at different times of day. Your tariff might be Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control. 

 

How can you raise awareness of this issue?

Ofgem has created a digital toolkit that stakeholders can use to help encourage consumers to arrange an appointment with their supplier for a new meter. Please find the campaign information and assets here: ​Folder icon RTS switch off – campaign toolkit
In order to reach every affected home, business and public building we would ask you to use these assets across your social media platforms, websites, and displayed in your constituency office to encourage your constituents to contact their supplier and find out if their meter requires upgrading.

 

It would also be very helpful if you could share these assets with local stakeholders who could also promote the issue via their social media channels or on their message boards. Whether this be via the local town hall notice board, GP practice waiting rooms, or any other community stakeholder you engage with we ask that you use your platform as a trusted voice to spread the word that consumers should contact their supplier as soon as is possible.

Below, you will find the Weekly Tension Monitoring form where you can report incidents, in your area, that make you feel unsafe. This is from Rachel Slade, Vale Community Safety Cohesion Co-ordinator. Her role is to identify areas, from several reported incidents, where scarce Police resources can be channelled. 

Please note also that it has identified a rise in vehicle crime in the Barry area. 

Individuals have been trying doors on vehicles that have personal belongings on display.

Please ensure you remove all personal belongings from your vehicle and also ensure that your vehicle is secure at all times.

The get  together will provide a chance for us to show our thanks for your support, reconnect and reflect on the year over a free cuppa and mince pie.

Tom Geere, Healthy Living Officer will be hosting a friendly and optional game of boccia (a sport similar to boules). We will also be joined by the Vale of Glamorgan’s Older People’s Champion, Councillor Belinda Loveluck-Edwards.

The event will be open from 11:00am – 12:30pm so please feel to drop in at a time that suits you.
