Ultra-processed foods have been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Now, photos have illustrated the true damage these foods are doing to the inside of the body.

In a recent case study, doctors revealed an image that looks more like a slab of steak than the cross-section of a woman’s thigh. The photo proves the deadly harm that ultra-processed foods (UPFs) pose.

The woman whose leg is pictured took in 87 percent of her nutrition from UPFs — industrial formulations made mostly from substances extracted from whole foods, such as refined sugars, oils and starches, along with additives like artificial flavors, colors, emulsifiers and preservatives.

Her diet consisted mostly of cold cereals, chocolate candy bars and regular soda. Despite her moderate activity level, the high concentration of UPFs still caused a marbled, steak-like appearance in her leg muscles.

And she is just one of many whose bodies are paying the price for a UPF-filled diet. In a separate study of 615 adults at risk of knee osteoarthritis, ultra-processed foods accounted for about 41 percent of their daily diet on average.

Researchers found that higher UPF consumption was linked to greater ‘marbling’ —fat that accumulates within the thigh muscles themselves, directly replacing healthy muscle tissue and weakening the muscle.

This hidden fat also puts people at an unhealthy weight. Greater fat accumulation in the muscles is linked to higher overall body fat and increased risk of metabolic disease.

In everyday life, fattier thigh muscles make climbing stairs, rising from a chair, carrying groceries, or walking briskly more difficult. Unsteadiness raises the risk of falls, and over time, the weakness leads to a more sedentary lifestyle, accelerating muscle loss and affecting independence.

The condition in which fat accumulates in muscle fibers is called myosteatosis.

In the presence of certain metabolic stressors, such as a diet high in ultra-processed foods, chronic low-grade inflammation or insulin resistance, fat cells begin to accumulate between and inside the muscle fibers.

Normally, healthy muscle tissue is composed of long, lean fibers that contract and generate force, but when the body is overloaded with refined sugars, unhealthy fats and chemical additives, the muscle tissue becomes inflamed.

Muscle cells also stop responding properly to insulin, meaning they cannot take up glucose for energy.

Instead of repairing muscle tissue or supporting healthy muscle fibers, specialized cells within the muscle get confused and start turning into fat cells.

The result is that pockets of fat develop where the contracting muscle used to be, essentially replacing the muscle itself. This directly weakens the muscle and impairs its ability to move, stabilize joints, and generate power.

The condition is not just about strength. Myosteatosis has been linked to several serious health problems. Studies show that people with fattier muscles have higher rates of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and chronic inflammation.

They are also at greater risk of hospitalization, surgical complications, and even earlier death, particularly in those with liver disease, kidney disease, or cancer.

The white streaks in this steak are fat. The same kind of fat infiltration — called marbling — can accumulate inside human thigh muscles when a diet is high in ultra-processed foods, directly weakening muscle tissue (stock)

Researchers used data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, a large study that followed people at risk for knee arthritis. They narrowed thousands of participants down to 615 people who did not already have arthritis, joint pain, or other chronic diseases.

Each participant completed a detailed questionnaire about everything they had eaten in the past year. Using a classification system, the researchers calculated what percentage of each person’s daily diet came from ultra-processed foods.

Each participant also underwent an MRI scan of their thighs. On those scans, researchers graded fat infiltration in the thigh muscles — including the hamstrings, quadriceps and inner thighs — on a scale from zero, which was no fat, to four, meaning more than 50 percent fat.

The study, published in the journal Radiology, found that people who consumed higher amounts of UPFs had significantly more intramuscular fat, particularly in the thighs.

For every increase in UPF consumption, muscle fat levels rose accordingly.

This held true for all muscle groups studied, including the hamstrings, quadriceps and inner thighs. The link was even stronger when researchers looked at belly size, or abdominal circumference, rather than just BMI.

The most affected muscles were the inner thighs (adductors) followed by the hamstrings (flexors). The quadriceps (extensors) showed the smallest but still significant effect. These results were the same for both men and women.

While researchers cannot yet say with certainty that cutting out UPFs will reverse existing muscle fat infiltration, there is good evidence that exercise and sustained weight loss can improve muscle quality.

UPFs are industrial products made from extracted substances like refined sugars, oils, and starches, plus artificial flavors, colors and preservatives (stock)

Exercise is the most promising intervention. Several studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise, such as walking 30 to 60 minutes most days, can reduce intramuscular fat in older adults, even without significant weight loss.

Resistance training improves muscle strength and function even if fat deposits remain.

Weight loss through bariatric surgery has also been shown to reduce intramuscular fat in severely obese patients, suggesting that significant metabolic changes can reverse some of the damage.

More importantly, reducing UPF intake almost certainly stops further damage and protects muscle health as a person ages. For most people, the goal should be preventing additional marbling while building lean muscle through strength training.

An experimental scheme to extend access to a Welsh town centre has begun this week following years of requests from local residents.

The move to extend loading and unloading hours in Bridgend town centre along with new Blue Badge parking bays came in to effect from April 15.

It will cover a number of streets such as Queen Street, Dunraven Place, and Market Street, which have been closed to traffic between the hours of 10am and 6pm, with bollards in place blocking access to pedestrianised parts of the town since 2004. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter

Bridgend County Borough Council recently announced it had purchased the local Rhiw Shopping Centre for a sum of £5.37m in what it said could be a “game-changer” for the town. You can read more about that here.

A council spokesman, speaking about the new traffic order, said: “Part of an 18-month experimental scheme, the changes are designed to support businesses while also improving accessibility for residents.

“Under the scheme current loading and unloading hours of before 10am and after 6pm will be updated to before 11am and after 4pm in order to better balance the needs of deliveries, businesses, and pedestrians during peak periods.

“At the same time Blue Badge parking bays will be installed along Derwen Road to offer improved access for registered badge holders as part of a more inclusive and flexible approach to town centre parking.

“The scheme will be carefully monitored and regularly reviewed and adjustments will be made where necessary using feedback from businesses and other key stakeholders to ensure the changes can deliver the maximum possible benefit.”

The proposal to test these steps for a period of 18 months was first approved by cabinet members in 2025 after years of calls from local shop owners to open the town centre back up to traffic.

They campaigned for this in the hope that it would encourage more people to visit the town and increase footfall.

It followed intense scrutiny from some council members who felt the move didn’t go far enough with many who wanted to see the roads opened up to traffic and parking on a more permanent basis.

The move also came just months after Councillor Ian Williams of Oldcastle asked the local authority to consider reimbursing fines issued to people parking in Bridgend town centre after what he said was confusion around access to the area.

At a full council meeting in February Cllr Williams said there had been a “great deal of confusion” over who and what was allowed into the town centre when the bollard was down following the approval of the order last year.

He also made reference to signage in the area which he said people didn’t understand as well as a council press announcement which he said had caused additional confusion.
Vulnerable dementia patients are being cared for by staff with as little as one hour of training, a major study has warned.

Around 70 per cent of care home residents are living with the condition, yet many workers receive only the most basic preparation.

Experts say the shortfall is leaving workers ‘unprepared and unsupported’, with serious consequences for the quality and safety of care.

The findings, from research commissioned by Alzheimer’s Society and led by the Centre for Dementia Research alongside IFF Research, show that half of all dementia training courses last just one to two hours.

More than a third of staff lack a basic understanding of dementia, while just 52 per cent feel ‘very competent’ supporting those with the condition.

Around one million people in the UK are living with dementia – a figure expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040 – yet only 55 per cent of care staff in England have received any dementia-specific training.

Only 39 per cent of courses meet recommended levels, and fewer than half of staff receive dementia training during their induction.

A striking 81 per cent of care workers said they want more dementia training, as the charity calls for it to be made mandatory.

Michelle Dyson, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Society, said: ‘One hour of dementia training doesn’t even scratch the surface.

‘Anything less than comprehensive training leaves care workers unprepared, coping with situations they have not been equipped for, which can put people with dementia at risk of inadequate care.

‘Baristas can receive more training to make great coffee than care workers receive to provide dementia care.

‘Care staff want and deserve better – they need training which gives them the skills and confidence to deliver the best possible care.

‘Without high-quality dementia training, social care will remain dangerously inconsistent, leaving families unsure whether loved ones will be supported with dignity and expertise.

‘We need to close the training gap – with better dementia care, everyone benefits. It is crucial that the UK Government includes a requirement for all relevant adult social care workers in its dementia plan.’

Joanne, a care worker who also cared for her father with Alzheimer’s, said staff often lacked vital skills.

She said: ‘There are often assumptions about what carers ‘should’ do and ignorance around how dementia affects people.

‘They did not provide reassurance when he was agitated – he was treated like a child.

‘If people understood the condition more, good dementia care could be much more easily replicated.’

It comes after a major win for the Daily Mail’s Defeating Dementia campaign, which will see thousands of patients fast-tracked onto clinical trials.

More than 15,500 people aged 65 to 75 have been invited to join the Dementia Trials Accelerator, aimed at speeding up the search for new treatments.

Recruitment remains a major barrier, with just 173 patients in England enrolled in late-stage trials in 2024–25 through the NIHR Research Delivery Network – far fewer than for other major diseases.

There is currently no cure for dementia, which claims 76,000 lives a year in the UK.

NFU Cymru representatives met with Wales Office minister Anna McMorrin on April 14 to discuss how the ongoing conflict is driving up costs and creating uncertainty in the supply of fuel and fertiliser – key inputs for farmers.

Abi Reader, president of NFU Cymru, said: “With the Wales Office acting as our link into the heart of the UK Government, we were pleased to have the opportunity to meet with the minister to provide a picture of the challenges our farmers are dealing with as a result of the impact of the war in the Middle East.

“We stressed the importance of continued regular dialogue between NFU Cymru and the Wales Office, for UK Government to closely and actively monitor input markets to give confidence that they are operating transparently and the need to model the impact that the conflict is having on domestic food production with a view to taking positive to support and underpin our ability to produce affordable food for the nation.”

Ms Reader and NFU Cymru deputy president Paul Williams presented data from farmers across Wales, emphasising that the full consequences of market disruptions may not become clear for several months.

They highlighted that decisions made now will have a delayed impact on farm outputs later in the year.

Concerns about cash flow remain high, with rising input prices compounded by uncertainty over final costs at the time of delivery.

It started with a weakness in the hands. At the time, Erin Taylor, then a college student in her early 20s, blamed the seemingly harmless, one-off ailment on studying too much and skipping her usual workouts.

But several months later, she began to notice that her voice sounded different. Her entire body felt stiff and her muscles had weakened, causing her walking to slow down. Still, she blamed the changes on her lack of exercise.

‘I just thought it was weakness, so I joined a CrossFit gym to get back into condition,’ she told the Daily Mail. ‘I could never figure out why I wasn’t getting stronger. Everything I tried just failed… and my walking slowed way down; one day I thought to myself, “I wonder if I can still run,” so I tried and my body wouldn’t do it.’

In 2023, about a year after her initial symptoms, Taylor finally went to the doctor at her mother’s urging. Testing showed she had sporadic limb-onset ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting around 35,000 Americans, including Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria actor Eric Dane, who died in February at 53, just one year after being diagnosed.

‘It’s weird because I was actually diagnosed with ALS almost immediately,’ Taylor, now 26, said. ‘I had no inkling that my little hand weakness and twitching and voice issues were fatal.’

Despite her devasting diagnosis, Taylor was able to graduate college. But soon after, her condition worsened.

Taylor was 23 years old and just out of school when she became trapped in her own body. On top of her slow decline in mobility, she gradually lost her ability to communicate.

‘My muscles are dying one by one, and so now I’m at the point where anything I try to do with my arms, hands or legs just doesn’t happen,’ she said. ‘I look down at my limbs like they are strangers to me.’

ALS – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – causes nerve cells that connect the brain and muscles to slowly die and stop working.

The brain can no longer send signals to muscles to move, leading to muscle wasting, paralysis and the loss of speech, swallowing and breathing.

Now, a once-aspiring botanist, Taylor has gone from hiking and doing fieldwork to being confined to a wheelchair, unable to feed or bathe herself. She is completely reliant on her mother.

Doctors have given her a life expectancy of just 28 years old.

‘The doctors don’t really know [how long I’ll live],’ she said, adding that her prognosis is based on ‘an average of how long people generally live.’

‘I was told that young people like myself tend to live longer, and I hope that’s the case,’ Taylor continued.

‘But I know that I’m further progressed than a lot of other people, and I’m younger than all of them.’

About 90 percent of ALS cases are sporadic, meaning the patient has no family history of the disease. Only five to ten percent of cases are hereditary.

Taylor’s was one of those sporadic cases. She had no prior reference for the disease.

‘The moment I heard it was a big question mark,’ she said. ‘What the heck is ALS? I had never heard of it.’

Taylor had no inkling that her hand weakness, twitching and voice issues were fatal. Now, her muscles are dying one by one and her limbs feel like ‘strangers’

By just a few months post-graduation, Taylor’s condition had worsened to the point that she could no longer hold her job as a field botanist – she was unable to lift and carry heavy loads like she could when she was first hired.

She then had to move back home with her mother. Having lived on her own since 17, Taylor struggled to give up her independence. She described leaving her friends behind as ‘gut-wrenching.’

‘Someone has to brush my teeth, prepare food and feed me,’ she said. ‘I also have to be showered and dressed.

‘It’s insanely frustrating to be reliant on someone else to remove an eyelash from my eye, or find a hair that’s fallen across my face.’

Of all her hardships, she misses her ability to speak the most – something she now does with eye-movement detection by a computer.

‘No one realizes how powerful the ability to communicate is until it’s gone,’ Taylor said. ‘I’m at the point where I can’t really convey my thoughts out loud anymore. If I do speak, I choose very simple words to say, and most people ask me to repeat myself.’

Instead, Taylor uses eye-gaze technology, a camera-based system that tracks where a person is looking on a screen.

By staring at a specific letter, word or icon for a fraction of a second, the person can ‘type’ out sentences, speak through a computerized voice, control a wheelchair, turn on lights or browse the internet.

She also uses a personal AI avatar – a digital, realistic likeness of the person on a screen that is powered by artificial intelligence.

Last year, Dane revealed he had dismissed an early symptom of ALS – weakness in his right thumb. ‘I started experiencing weakness in my right hand and didn’t think anything of it,’ he said on Good Morning America

Taylor uses an AI avatar that looks and sounds like her. Using eye-gaze to type, the avatar speaks in her original voice with expressions and lip-sync, allowing emotional, human communication rather than a robotic voice

Taylor types words using eye-gaze and the avatar that looks like her speaks those words out loud in a voice that sounds like her original voice – before ALS affected her speech.

The avatar can also show facial expressions, like a smile or a sad look, and move its lips in sync with the words.

This allows Taylor to communicate with emotion and personality, rather than sounding like a generic robot.

‘Strangers think I’m illiterate or mentally handicapped, and nothing is further from the truth,’ Taylor said. ‘I’m just as intelligent as I’ve always been, and I’m not in any pain. But I’m locked away in this body that is failing me because of this disease.’

Driven to spread awareness about ALS, Taylor now devotes her time online to educating people through her Instagram account, @unsteadyandready.

Her efforts focus on pushing assistive technology developers to make a scalable, barrier-free worldwide solution for those who can no longer speak.

‘Not only am I an advocate, and use [the] technology to give speeches and interviews,’ she said, ‘but I’ve been in a race car, I’ve been skydiving and paragliding, I’ve traveled extensively and hiked – all after I was diagnosed.

‘If by posting my story I make even the tiniest dent in this disease by either reach or inspiration, I will feel like my life wasn’t wasted.’

When it comes to the wind and solar energy grifters, I don’t mind a bit taking joy from their troubles. [some emphasis, links added]

The last few days have brought the news that, apparently, the majority of the remaining wind and solar electricity projects still in development in New York State are under imminent threat of cancellation.

At this point, the details are sketchy, and nobody is attributing the news to any named source as far as I can find. Nevertheless, the story is sufficiently widely reported from normally reliable sources that I’m ready to give it credit.

The Albany Times-Union appears to have been the first with the story in a piece from April 12 with the headline, “Clean energy projects in NY on hold as battle over costs escalates.”

The gist is that the developers of some two dozen “clean energy” (wind and solar) projects in upstate New York have approached the State and demanded more money above agreed-upon prices just to proceed with previously contracted developments.

Unless they get the additional funds, they are threatening to walk away from the projects.

Excerpt:

“Nearly two dozen of New York’s clean energy projects may be scrapped because they are financially impractical, a possible outcome that would exacerbate the state’s struggling efforts to meet increasing power demands while also ensuring the electric grid becomes less dependent on fossil fuels.

“The stalled wind and solar projects would power roughly 2 million homes, but the developers want to renegotiate state contracts to reflect tariffs and rising labor costs not factored in when their deals were struck between 2023 and early 2025. Without more revenue, the projects won’t be economically viable and will need to be canceled, according to a trade organization representing them.”

The Times-Union piece does not contain a list of projects threatened with cancellation, nor the names of their developers in question.

However, it does contain this quote from one Deanna Cohen, identified as a spokesperson for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA):

“The authority ‘expects its developers to honor their commitments,’ spokeswoman Deanna Cohen said. ‘The competitive bidding process is designed to protect consumers and result in fair and cost-effective contracts.’ “

Corroborating the Times-Union story, here is a piece from FingerLakes1.com yesterday. Excerpt:

“According to Public Power NY, developers are signaling they may walk away from projects after the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority declined to renegotiate contracts to account for higher costs tied to tariffs and inflation. … The potential cancellations could significantly impact New York’s renewable energy pipeline at a time when the state is already behind pace on targets established under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.”

Well, NYSERDA, what are you going to do if the developers of most of your renewable energy projects just walk away?

Readers here with long memories may recall the nearly identical saga that played out from 2023 to 2025 involving New York’s grand schemes for offshore wind developments to replace most of its fossil fuel power plants.

I covered this situation in various pieces over that time period, including this one from April 17, 2025, that included an overview of the entire history.

The short version is that beginning in 2019, New York State entered into fixed-price contracts (in the range of $80-90/MWh) with big-time developers (Equinor, Ørsted, etc.) to develop 4+ gigawatts of offshore wind turbines in the Atlantic Ocean; but in September 2023, all the developers came in and demanded big price increases and threatened to cancel.

The State (via NYSERDA) initially bluffed and blustered that it was going to hold the developers to their contracts. But after multiple months of that, NYSERDA caved and re-bid the contracts, ending in early 2024 with contracts with the same developers at nearly-doubled prices in the range of $150/MWh.

And then President Trump swept into office in January 2025 and blew the whole thing “out of the water,” as they say. (At least one of the offshore projects has since been revived under some kind of deal between the Trump administration and Governor Hochul.)

However, the rest of the offshore wind projects look rather dead at this point.

So with regard to the upstate and onshore projects, we are now at the place where we were in September 2023 with the offshore projects.

Does the State hold any more cards this time around? It may hold even fewer cards this time, because many of these upstate developments have likely qualified for federal tax benefits that, in light of the One Big Beautiful Bill, will no longer be available to anyone who starts today from scratch.

Another option for New York, and by far the best one, would be to take this opportunity to walk away from the renewable energy fantasy.

In any rebid of the on-shore wind contracts, the prices are likely to be double to triple the price that could be had from a brand-new natural gas plant.

And the power from a natural gas plant would be dispatchable and reliable, instead of the intermittent power from wind turbines or solar panels that is never there when you really need it. I don’t think that our Governor and bureaucrats are quite ready to go that route yet, but they are getting closer with every passing day.

The anti-anxiety drug Xanax has been urgently recalled over fears it may not work as effectively as intended.

Pennsylvania-based Viatris, Inc., voluntarily recalled its 60-tablet bottles of Xanax due to ‘failed dissolution specifications,’ meaning they may not dissolve correctly and release their active ingredient at the expected rate.

This could mean someone taking Xanax, one of America’s most popular anti-anxiety drugs, may receive too much or too little of the medication, raising the risk of overdoses or intensifying feelings of anxiety.

Recalled bottles were distributed nationwide between August 27, 2024, and May 29, 2025, according to the California State Board of Pharmacy. It’s unclear how many bottles were affected and the number of consumers who may have received them.

The lot number was 8177156, with bottles containing 60, 3mg extended-release pills. The FDA noted the expiration date was February 28, 2027.

The California State Board said the recall was issued ‘out of an abundance of caution,’ adding it is not aware of any reports of adverse reactions.

Xanax is the brand name for alprazolam, which belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines that act as sedatives to slow the nervous system down.

The drug is typically prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders and provide short-term relief from situational anxiety, such as giving a speech or flying on an airplane.

About 16 million prescriptions for the drug are filled every year in the US.

The Xanax pills in the recall were extended-release, meaning they release the active ingredients slowly into the body over a prolonged period rather than all at once.

This is meant to reduce the number of daily doses needed and lower the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, impaired coordination, memory issues, slurred speech or blurry vision.

However, drugs that have failed dissolution specifications do not break down at the correct rate, meaning it may be released too quickly or too slowly, reducing overall effectiveness.

This is a particular concern for Xanax because the drug can be highly addictive, as it enhances the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA and the feel-good hormone dopamine. Accidentally taking doses higher than intended may increase the risk of addiction.

And if the body is already dependent on Xanax or used to it, suddenly taking a smaller dose may trigger withdrawal symptoms such as heightened anxiety, panic attacks, seizures and insomnia.

Xanax is the latest drug to be pulled from shelves due to failed dissolution. Last month, the blood pressure medication Metoprolol Succinate Extended-Release Tablets were recalled for the same reason and given a Class II designation.

And last year, the statin atorvastatin calcium was pulled for the same reason, with the recall affecting 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg tablets.

Zio’s Gelateria received an award for Outstanding Achievement in the Dessert Parlour of the Year category at the Welsh Cafe & Bakery Awards on March 23, showcasing their dedication to pushing the boundaries of the dessert world.

These awards aim to celebrate as many cafes in Wales as possible, highlighting their excellent menus, customer service and hard work alongside the innovation of talented individuals who work within the industry.

Zio Zeraschi, owner of Zio’s Gelateria, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been recognised. It comes as a bit of a surprise but we’re extremely grateful.”

The business was inspired by Mr Zeraschi’s Nonno, Giacomo Zeraschi. Upon moving to Wales in 1928 he sold his homemade ice cream around the Welsh valleys from his cart. When the family moved to Barry Island 30 years later, he would open the Piccolo Bar and begin the Zeraschi’s reign on the seafront.

A young Zio would work alongside his parents here but dreamt of making his own gelato, just like his Nonno, and wanted to bring a taste of Italy to the Welsh coastline. His passion for ice cream spans more than 30 years, with hours of research put into the different machinery, flavours and formulas that would make his business great upon its opening in 2018.

Today, Zio’s makes and serves up a range of exciting ice cream flavours whilst perfecting the traditional classics that keep customers coming back for more, tailoring the menu to suit the seasons.

Mr Zeraschi continued: “This award goes out to our staff too. They’re such a nice team and they work hard so its nice for them to also be recognised alongside the business.

‘Master ice cream maker’ Mariana said: “The more people that come to visit us, the more positive feedback we get and it’s always great to hear.”

This Barry business isn’t the only one recognised at the Welsh Cafe & Bakery Awards, as Coastal Coffee was named the Best Coffee Shop in Wales – something that Mr Zeraschi says is “brilliant”.

The University of Aberdeen has been awarded funding to lead a five-year exploration of Wogan Cavern at Pembroke Castle.

Wogan Cavern is said to house evidence of early prehistoric humans as well as important animal remains – such as the 120,000-year-old hippo.

The project, which is funded by the Calleva Foundation, will see researchers from the University of Aberdeen join forces with other leading specialists across Britain and Europe.

The cave was thought to have been dug out by the Victorians, and it was long assumed that little archaeological material remained.

However, small‑scale excavations between 2021 and 2024 uncovered ‘remarkable’ evidence for human and animal visits over more than 100,000 years, with much of Wogan Cavern’s sediments remaining intact.

This, say researchers, means the cave is rapidly emerging as one of the most important prehistoric archives in Britain.

Dr Rob Dinnis, who directed the initial excavations, will lead the project for the University of Aberdeen.

“Despite the limited work done so far, we can already say that Wogan Cavern is a truly remarkable site,” he told STV News.

“Not only is there extremely rare evidence for early Homo sapiens, there are also hints at even earlier human occupation, probably by Neanderthals.

“There is no other site like it in Britain – it is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime discovery.

“With this new project we can learn a great deal about our early prehistoric forebears, about how they lived and what their worlds looked like.”

The researchers said larger scale excavations could provide insights into past climate change, extinct species, and the multiple periods when humans called the cave their home.

Dr Dinnis continued: “We are optimistic that the cave can chart a long sequence of human activity, from hunter-gatherers living there immediately after the last Ice Age around 11,500 years ago, back to Britain’s earliest Homo sapiens between 45,000 and 35,000 years ago, and maybe also earlier traces likely left by Neanderthals.

“We have also found hippo bones, which probably date to the last interglacial period, around 120,000 years ago.

“The site could therefore tell us about how multiple changes in climate and environment affected people living there over 100,000 years or more.”

Professor Kate Britton, a specialist in science-based archaeology at the University of Aberdeen, said: “Wogan Cavern provides a unique chance to use all the scientific techniques now available to archaeologists.

“Because the bones are well preserved, we can learn a lot about past environments and ecosystems, and do high-resolution scientific dating.

“Furthermore, pilot studies have shown that ancient DNA is preserved, in both the bones and the cave sediments.

The project’s team of specialists are excited to learn as much as possible about the cave and its early inhabitants – animal and human – in the coming years.”

When the Beatles played New York’s Shea Stadium in 1965, the audience included Bob Dylan, who had first met the band a year earlier. What followed was a long-standing friendship, mixed with fierce competitiveness. In Jim Windolf’s Where The Music Had To Go, we find a photo of 1969’s Isle Of Wight festival, with three Beatles attentively watching Dylan’s set. It turned out their paths frequently overlapped after the Beatles split, too.

New York Times features editor Windolf casts his beady eye over the twin histories of these cultural icons. Paul McCartney is sat down for a revealing interview about his friendship with, and mutual respect between, himself and Dylan; D.A. Pennebaker, who shot ‘Dylan on the road’ documentary Don’t Look Back and filmed John Lennon and Dylan hanging out together for Eat The Document, makes a few appearances. Where The Music Had To Go is a meticulously researched and unputdownable read with a feast of new information for even the most learned Dylan or Beatles scholar.
