Salford Lads Club on The Smiths album cover gets status upgrade

by David Jones 25/06/2026
written by David Jones

A “remarkable” 123-year-old youth club building made famous after featuring on a Smiths album sleeve has had its listed status upgraded from Grade II to Grade II*.

Salford Lads Club was built in the city on Coronation Street in 1903 and has helped generations of boys – and later girls – by offering activities like sport, art and music.

It comes less than two years after the club was saved from closure after a fundraising campaign raised £250,000, including donations from local music legends like Morrissey and Graham Nash.

Meanwhile, Crossley House in Openshaw, Manchester, formerly the Crossley Lads’ Club, has been added to the National Heritage List for England at Grade II by the government.

Historic England said the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s decision, following its advice, recognised the two rare surviving examples of purpose-built lads’ clubs, buildings once common in industrial towns and cities but now increasingly scarce.

Historic England’s Emma Squire and Claudia Kenyatta said the “two remarkable buildings tell the story of a movement that transformed opportunities for generations of young people”.

The Salford club was built in 1903 to designs by architect Henry Lord, and the pair said it was one of the largest and most architecturally ambitious examples ever built, retaining an exceptional degree of survival both externally and internally.

The club is perhaps best known for being featured in The Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead album in 1986.

Adolescence star cast in Hamburg Days Beatles series

by David Jones 25/06/2026
written by David Jones

Hamburg Days started production in Germany and Liverpool in May.

The Beatles performed more than 250 gigs in the German port city between 1960 and 1962.

The series has been inspired by the memoirs of Klaus Voormann, who met the band in Hamburg as a young artist and went on to design the cover of their Revolver album in 1966 before later appearing on John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison’s solo albums.

Producers said the series would show the band – which at the time included bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer Pete Best – meeting Voorman and photographer Astrid Kirchherr.

The drama has been scripted by Wirral-born Jamie Carragher – one of the writers behind the HBO comedy-drama Succession.

Director Christian Schwochow, who worked on the Netflix series The Crown, is the showrunner of the series, and Bafta-winner David Holmes, who worked on Killing Eve and the Ocean’s franchise, will curate the music.

McDonald’s, Nando’s, Spoons, Alton Towers and Odeon slash prices from today

The new Great British Summer Savings start from June 25 with money off everything from pubs and restaurants to zoos and bus tickets

Neil Shaw Assistant Editor

06:21, 25 Jun 2026

A temporary VAT cut to reduce prices at family attractions such as zoos and theme parks as well as the cost of children’s cinema tickets and restaurant meals has come into effect. Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the “Great British Summer Savings” measure – which begins on Thursday – as part of a package aimed at easing the impact on the cost of living from the Iran war.

Peppa Pig World, Alton Towers and Legoland are among the well-known attractions taking part. Merlin Entertainments, which owns 20 venues including Alton Towers and Legoland, has updated ticket prices to show “summer VAT savings applied”. Advance tickets for both parks now start at £29.75, down from £34.

Wiltshire safari park Longleat has also updated its ticketing system, with the discount bringing the cost of advance tickets for a family of four down to £122.30, a saving of £17.50. The Odeon, Vue and Cineworld cinema chains are also taking part, with Odeon saying a family ticket for two adults and two children will come down from £32 to £28.50 during the scheme.

Haven Holidays is also participating, and said families will benefit whether they have already booked their holiday or book in the coming weeks. Greene King, with more than 2,500 outlets, McDonald’s, Wetherspoons and Nando’s are among the dining locations passing on the tax saving on children’s meals.

Nando’s said its “Nandino” meals will come down from £6.95 to £6.08 while on the Wetherspoons children’s menu a £5.75 meal drops to £5.03, and McDonald’s is cutting the price of a typical Happy Meal by 27% to £2.99. Season tickets, such as the popular Merlin passes that start at £139, are not included in the scheme.

The rules say that a weekly or season pass allowing multiple visits beyond the summer holidays do not qualify if they cost more than a standard single-entry ticket. There is no legal requirement for businesses to take part in the scheme, which runs across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland until September 1.

The Treasury estimated the scheme would cost around £300 million and also includes free bus travel for children aged between five and 15 in England during the school holidays in August. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “The cost of living isn’t just about paying the bills, it’s about being able to afford the moments that matter with your family.

“Whether it’s a trip to the cinema, a day out together or family meal, too many parents have had to hold back because of pressure on household budgets – that’s why we’re slashing VAT on family days out this summer.” Rachel Reeves said: “I know the cost of living is a number one concern for families, and it can be even harder over the summer holidays when kids want to do things and money is tight.

“So we’re making it that bit easier for families to make memories together and enjoy the little treats – while giving a boost to businesses across the UK.”

Theme parks and cinemas welcomed the slashing of VAT, with British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions chief executive Paul Kelly saying it was “a very welcome and timely boost for the UK’s visitor attraction sector”. Our members stand ready to pass on this benefit and deliver brilliant, memorable experiences for visitors of all ages.”

UK Hospitality chairwoman Kate Nicholls said a lower rate of VAT for hospitality was “the quickest and simplest way to lower prices and boost consumer confidence”.

HMRC announces 22% tax on cash interest held in stocks and shares ISAs

by David Jones 24/06/2026
written by David Jones

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced major changes to the regime

08:15, 24 Jun 2026Updated 12:59, 24 Jun 2026

A 22% levy is set to be introduced on interest earned from cash held in stocks and shares Isas to prevent savers getting around new cash Isa limit rules from 2027. In last year’s budget, the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, announced major changes to the regime, including the end of the Lifetime Isa, aimed at people saving for a first home or retirement, and a lower cap on cash Isa savings for everyone aged under 65.

The limit for stocks and shares and innovative finance Isas (non-cash Isas) will remain at £20,000, alongside moves to encourage an investment culture.

The cash Isa allowance for people aged 65 and over will remain at £20,000. A factsheet placed on the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website said rules will be introduced to ensure the policy achieves its objective.

Rules will be introduced to prevent people subscribing up to £20,000 cash in a non-cash Isa and leaving it there long-term, earning tax-free interest.

The rules also aim to stop people subscribing £20,000 to a non-cash Isa and then transferring those funds to a cash Isa, or subscribing £20,000 to a non-cash Isa and use the funds to purchase “wholly cash-like” investments.

Among the changes, there will be a flat rate charge (22%) on interest or alternative finance return paid on cash held within a non-cash Isa, HMRC said.

Simon Harrington, head of public affairs at PIMFA (Personal Investment Management and Financial Advice Association), said: “We remain sceptical that these changes will have any real effect on consumer investment behaviour and fear they will do the opposite.

“Far from encouraging take up, they risk making the stocks and shares Isa, the very wrapper the Government wants people to use, less attractive.”

HMRC said a technical consultation with industry on the draft legislation will start shortly and regulations will be laid in the autumn, with the new rules coming into force from April 6 2027.

Tom Riley, Nationwide Building Society’s group director of retail products said: “Ensuring a level playing field between cash and non-cash Isas is vital to maintaining a strong savings market.

“We welcome the Government’s introduction of controls to support its ambition to get more people investing, while ensuring over-65s can rely on the full cash Isa allowance.”

Andrew Gall, head of savings at the Building Societies Association (BSA) said: “We welcome the Government providing greater clarity on its proposed Isa reforms.

“It is vital that savers have clear information and sufficient time to understand how the changes will affect them and the choices available to them from April 2027.

“Building societies also need certainty on the final rules so they can update systems and communicate with their members well ahead of implementation.”

Jasvinder Gakhal, chief executive, money at Skipton Building Society said: “This consultation is a step in the right direction,” adding “but the detail now matters”.

Jeremy Cox, head of strategy at Coventry Building Society, said: “We’re moving away from a fair and straightforward Isa system, where all adults can save or invest up to £20,000 tax-free each year, towards a more complex and confusing set of rules that will feel unfair to many consumers.”

Andrew Prosser, head of Investments at InvestEngine, said: “Our worry is that instead of encouraging investing, this could end up putting people off.

“If stocks and shares Isas become more complex and less straightforward, some savers may just disengage altogether – which would go against the whole point of trying to build a stronger investing culture in the first place.

“What we really need is to improve financial education and make it more accessible – that would do far more to encourage people to invest than simply restricting how they use their savings and would be a more effective way of building a healthier investment culture in the UK.”

The difference between dehydration and just being thirsty

by David Jones 24/06/2026

The difference between dehydration and just being thirsty

Staying hydrated in the heat is crucial (Image: Getty)

The UK is currently sweltering under extreme temperatures, with much of the country under a red warning for heat. The mercury could creep up to 40°C in some places, and people are being urged to stay sensible in the high heat.

One of the most important things to remember in a heatwave is to stay hydrated. If you’re sweating more in the hot weather, you need to replenish that liquid to ensure you don’t become dehydrated. But how can you tell the difference between dehydration and regular thirst?

James Morehen, sports nutritionist and hydration expert at the electrolyte brand Vidrate, has revealed the hidden signs of dehydration to watch for, and how to tell when it’s gone too far.

How to tell if you’re dehydrated

It’s not easy to tell if you are dehydrated. The signs can be quite subtle, so it’s important to keep an eye out.

James said: “Dehydration signs aren’t always obvious, they can show up as a headache or difficulty concentrating.

“This can be mistaken for tiredness or screen fatigue, but if you experience either during hot weather, it can be an early sign your body needs more fluids.”

Certain cravings can also signal dehydration. If you find yourself reaching for salty or sugary food, it could be a sign your body is struggling.

James explained: “When fluid levels drop, it can lead to fatigue, which the body may interpret as hunger.”

The third sign, which can be unpleasant both for you and the people around you.

James explained: “Persistent bad breath can sometimes be an overlooked sign of dehydration. When you’re not drinking enough fluids, your body produces less saliva, which plays a key role in washing away bacteria in the mouth.

“As bacteria build up, it can lead to an unpleasant odour, so staying well hydrated can help support better oral health as well as overall hydration.”

What’s the difference between thirst and dehydration?

Thirst is actually a late sign of dehydration. By the time you start to feel thirsty, it’s already in effect. That’s why it’s important to regularly sip water throughout the day to stop yourself getting too dehydrated.

James said: “Drinking a full glass of water when you wake up and before you go to bed is one of the best things you can do during hot weather.

“Your morning glass helps to rehydrate after a night of sweating, and a glass before bed can help regulate body temperature – just leave a gap of 30 to 45 minutes before sleep to avoid a disrupted night.”

You should also keep drinking water throughout the day.

How much water should I be drinking?

James said: “It is recommended to drink six to eight glasses of water a day but during hot weather, but in hot weather this can increase to around three litres, especially if you’re active or spending time outdoors.

“A simple way to check if you’re hydrated enough is by checking your urine colour. You should aim for a pale-yellow colour, if it’s darker than that, you likely need to consume more water.”

Dispersal order issued for Cosmeston Country Park

by David Jones 24/06/2026
written by David Jones

Issued by South Wales Police, the order covers Cosmeston Country Park and follows a day of serious safety concerns involving groups of young people.

It enables officers to direct individuals or groups to leave the area if their behaviour risks causing alarm or distress.

Rob Thomas, chief executive of Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “We have been in discussion with South Wales Police about this situation, which has escalated throughout the day.

“Large numbers of teenagers have been jumping into the water and engaging in anti-social behaviour.

“Repeated requests to stop have been ignored, as have warnings about the risks of entering open water without lifeguards and safety precautions in place.

“Council staff have been met with abuse as they attempt to protect youngsters from serious injury.

“Cold water shock can kill as can strong currents and hidden hazards.”

The dispersal order will remain in place until the evening of Friday, June 26.

Vale of Glamorgan Council is urging parents to remind young people of the dangers and to encourage them to swim only in designated areas.
