In the last ten years, Laura Hallinan’s life has changed beyond recognition, mostly due to the fact that four years ago she gave birth to her first child, a girl called Hallie and now has twin boys aged 18 months.
But the joy that becoming a mother brought to her has a certain sadness about the fact that her baby brother, Conor, will never meet his niece and nephews.
Last March marked ten years since Conor died by suicide at the age of 23. He was the baby of the family and his loss was another devastating blow, following the death of Laura’s mum when they were just children, something that Laura believes contributed to the depression that both she and Connor suffered.
‘My mum was killed in a car accident in ‘98,’ says Laura who is now 37.
‘I was nine and Eoghan, my next brother was eight while Conor was just five. We were really young and at the time obviously didn’t understand what her death meant but then at different times and in different ways it affected us.’
As a teenager, Laura struggled with the fact that her mother was gone but also put pressure on herself to be a female role model for her younger brothers
‘Being the only girl in the family and growing up without a mum, and I had a really good support network around me of my aunts, but it’s not the same as having your mum,’ she says.
‘I was going through all of those changes and hormones and there is so much going on in your body.
‘And I began coming to the realisation of what it meant to lose my mum. I couldn’t understand why she would be taken from us in this way.’
Laura struggled to understand the enormity of grief and the kind of loss and how it had affected her life as she was so young.
‘I just pushed the grief down,’ she says. ‘ In my teens I was getting help periodically but it just wasn’t working for me
‘I had all these different feelings, which I didn’t know at the time were early onset depression.
‘I had been trying to keep moving forward, trying to be the best female role model for my brothers, taking on almost a motherly role to them.
‘And then also I was trying to do all of the things that my parents wanted for me in my life – do well at school and go to college and hope to get a good job but these were all pressures I put on myself and I just kept pushing down these feelings of sadness.’
But in her early twenties, Laura found herself struggling more with dark thoughts which she felt she had to tell her GP about
‘We tried a few different medications, but ultimately some of my thoughts were getting darker and I knew that I couldn’t not be here for my brothers – they were the biggest part of my life and I knew they needed support and they couldn’t go through any more loss.’
Laura got help at St Patrick’s Hospital where she was an inpatient for a month.
‘I wasn’t the youngest, but I was quite young compared to a lot of the other patients, and I came out of there knowing I never ever wanted to go back to somewhere like that.’
Laura then spent a lot of time working on her own mental health and found the support she needed from student counsellors at her college DIT as it would have been too difficult for her to pay privately at that time.
‘Their in-house counselling services and student support services were supplied by the college so that was a great help.’
After college Laura continued to get therapy so when Conor began showing signs of depression, she recognised what was happening.
‘Conor’s first trip into St John of God was when he was 18 or 19 when he was in for a couple of days,’ Laura says.
‘There was a dark sadness in him and I feel that the day mum died in such a tragic way, part of him broke and never really seemed to heal.’
In his daily life, Conor was popular and fun, the life and soul of the party, who loved playing sports and was really popular.
‘He was a joy to be around,’ Laura says.
‘ I remember the time of his funeral, someone came up to me and said he was infectious in all the most positive ways and it was such a lovely way to describe him because he really was – you couldn’t meet him and not love him.
‘But as a family we and some of his close friends knew he was really struggling.’
Conor had tried really hard to get better, Laura and her father and brother had tried really hard to help him but unfortunately he decided to take his own life.
It was something that was, and still is, devastating for the whole family but with help they have learned to live with it.
And some of that help for Laura has come from Pieta House, where she received bereavement counselling that is specially designed for those who have lost someone to suicide
‘When people come to me and tell me they are worried about someone, I tell them that they can ring Pieta for advice on how to maybe talk to a loved one about getting help,’ Laura says.
‘This is also really helpful because a lot of people don’t know what to do and when people are in a difficult position, they may not be open to getting support.’
Laura has come out the other side of her mental health issues and was provided with the tools and the skills to have a full and happy life, which is why she has been a supporter and ambassador for Pieta House’s Tea and Talk campaign.
Pieta has partnered with Lyons Tea for the second year to encourage people across Ireland to host a Pieta Tea & Talk Morning on World Mental Health Day, taking place on Saturday October 10, to raise vital funds for Pieta’s free suicide and self-harm prevention services.

This is the second year of the event where Tea & Talk invites families, friends, neighbours, workplaces, schools, clubs and community groups to come together over a cup of tea.
Every Tea & Talk event helps Pieta continue providing free support to people experiencing suicidal thoughts, engaging in self-harm and those bereaved by suicide.
Laura hosted her first one last year and feels the fundraisers are essential as Pieta House provides so much support to families like hers.
‘It is different for every family,’ she says. ‘It can be incredibly difficult to understand why they would make this decision to leave this world and leave everything behind.
‘Because I’d lost my mum I really struggled with losing her, understanding her loss and the rationale and because there really is none.
‘With Conor, I knew he was really unwell in his final days but I couldn’t take that away from him.
‘But the real message is that this might feel like it is the only solution but what you are going through can be short-term problem in the sense that with help and with support, you can always come out the other side.
‘It can just be very difficult to see that light when you’re feeling so down.’
Losing someone to suicide, Laura says, is a whole different world of grief and the team at Pieta House are really skilled in helping you through that.
‘There is a team there to support anyone with any kind of mental health issue that is impacting your or your loved ones.’
Lauren McCarthy, Head of Campaigns & Community Fundraising at Pieta House, says the charity takes over 100,000 calls to their crisis helpline every year.
‘At least 500 people a year die by suicide in Ireland,’ says Lauren. ‘So if you think about the wider ripple effect of that, you have 500 families, 500 communities so it is a widespread issue.
‘Our Tea and Talk morning happens around World Mental Health Day on October 10 or whatever day suits people to hold their own Tea and Talk morning.
‘They can have it at home, at work, or at school, and then by raising the funds they are keeping Pieta’s suicide and self-harm service prevention services available and free to anyone who needs help at any time.’
‘And obviously coming together and just having a chat and sharing company with people is obviously just a lovely thing to do, but then it also has this really incredible impact across all of our communities then as well by raising the funds and keeping those services available.’
For Laura, she can’t believe it has been ten years since she last spoke to Conor.
‘I can’t believe it has gone so quickly,’ she says.
‘I look at my three children and think Conor would have so much fun with them. My brother Eoghan has two kids now and he has just named his son Conor and my daughter is called Hallie after Conor’s nickname.’
Her dad who has suffered so much losing his wife and his child has had a new ray of light brought to his life with the arrival of his grandchildren.
There are the moments of sadness when Laura might hear a song that reminds her of her brother and meeting his friends reminds her of the life her brother could have had – getting married and having a family of his own.
‘But Conor was just such a wonderful character and person that you also have to smile and find the joy in every day where you can.’

Laura is also grateful that she is still around to be a mum and she is mindful of her own mental health too.
Having children, especially young twins, can be stressful but she makes sure she feels good. And feeling good will include having some Tea and Talk with her friends in October.
‘Last year I had about 200 new mums in a community hall in Rathfarnham so I am back at work and I will have to scale it down a bit this year,’ she says, laughing about the juggling between work and parenting
‘We’ll have a morning or afternoon to get my friends together because it is chaotic these days with children and activities and everything else going on in life. So it’s a nice excuse to meet up and have a chat too.’
