Rhydian-Ky John, 20, of Court Road, Barry, appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court for sentencing after previously indicating a guilty plea.
The court heard that on November 24, last year, the defendant entered part of a dwelling house at Dylan Crescent, Barry and stole the gold chain.
The offence was prosecuted under Section 9(1)(b) of the Theft Act 1968, relating to burglary of a dwelling and theft.
John entered a guilty plea on June 1.
When sentencing, magistrates said the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified.
The court cited a significant breach of trust, the fact the offence was committed against a vulnerable victim, and the impact on the woman as outlined in a victim personal statement read to the court by prosecutor Laura Thomas.
John was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, suspended for 15 months. The sentence includes a 15-month supervision period.
As part of the suspended sentence order, he must undergo mental health treatment under the care of Dr Danae Gilnou for 15 months, comprising 12 sessions.
He must also complete up to 20 days of rehabilitation activity as directed by his responsible officer.
The court imposed a restraining order prohibiting John from entering any premises occupied by the vicitm as her usual place of residence.
The order will remain in force until July 14, 2028.
Magistrates also ordered him to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a victim surcharge of £187. Payment will be made in monthly instalments of £20 beginning on August 12.
No compensation order was made because, the court was told, there was insufficient information available to determine compensation.
