Driver in hospital with serious injuries after air ambulance lands on M4

Drivers faced lengthy delays on Monday evening following a crash near Miskin

A driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M4 which caused hours of disruption for thousands of motorists, police have said.

An air ambulance landed at the scene of the crash on the M4 between junction 33 at Capel Llanilltern and junction 34 at Miskin on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the single vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway shortly before 3.30pm. A police spokesman said the car involved collided with the central reservation. The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The motorway was closed completely in both directions to all traffic while emergency services responded. Traffic Wales warned that the road would be closed “for some time” and described the incident as “serious”.

There were long delays for drivers, with delays of more than 40 minutes reported on the motorway. Traffic was also very congested on surrounding routes as motorists sought to avoid the motorway. The M4 reopened shortly after 6pm.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “Police attended a road traffic collision on the M4 westbound between Junction 33 and 34 at 3.24pm on Monday, July 13, involving one vehicle.

“The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the vehicle collided with the central reservation.

“Any witnesses to the collision who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call 101 quoting occurrence number 2600223696.”
