Easily spot suitcases at baggage claim using simple tape trick

Holidaymakers can use the trick to help ensure their luggage is easy to recognise

Nobody wants to lose their luggage at the start of the holiday. Unfortunately, accidents do happen when travellers mix up their suitcases at baggage claim. Many holidaymakers add colourful ribbons to their luggage to prevent accidents and make their bags easier to spot.

But there’s another trick that serves the same purpose, and travellers don’t have to worry about the ribbon falling off during transit. A social media user shared the tip on Instagram after seeing a holidaymaker use the ribbon trick.

Posting as @Jeffandlaurenshow, a travel creator revealed they always use ribbon on their suitcase. “Add bright ribbon to your suitcase handle to easily spot at baggage claim,” the travel lover said.

However, a viewer knew another trick that could be even better. “Baggage handler friend once said DON’T wrap ribbons around the handle,” the commenter replied. “Instead use brightly colored duct tape. Fluorescent yellow and pink are my go-tos.”

Alternatively, passengers could use stickers for the same effect. easyJet recommends the tip on its website. Sharing ‘useful packing tips’ for passengers with hold luggage, the airline advises customers to use eye-catching labels.

“Make sure your bags stand out from the crowd on the carousel! We advised attaching something noticeable and unique to your luggage like a colourful ribbon, eye-catching sticker or personalised tag,” the advice says.

“This will make it easier for you to spot your luggage on the carousel at arrivals and avoid any confusion with similar bags. We also recommend adding a label to your luggage with your name and contact details such as address, email and phone number and put a copy of these details inside your bag too!

“This would really help us reunite you with your bag in the unlikely event of the exterior tags falling off. Finally, make sure to remove any old luggage tags or stickers from previous trips, you’ll get a fresh new tag for your trip at our Bag Drop desks.”

As the airline sets out, adding a label inside your luggage can make all the difference if the tags fall off. It’s also important to choose a reliable bag.

easyJet says: “We advise checking your bag over before your trip to make sure zips, handles and wheels are working properly, it’s free from any major rips or cracks and that any loose straps or handles are secured to avoid damage. Avoid overpacking as this can result in your bag bursting during travel.”
