New Lidl Wednesday rule will get you 10% off some shopping

by David Jones

The change across all stores starts at the end of July

With household budgets still under pressure, new research commissioned by Lidl GB reveals that almost seven in 10 believe eating healthily comes at a higher cost, with nearly half admitting they have opted for a less healthy choice because it was cheaper.

Lidl has teamed up with budget chef Miguel Barclay, creator of the One Pound Meals series, to launch seven new £1 Planet Plate recipes. Using simple, affordable ingredients available in Lidl GB stores, Miguel’s recipes show how shoppers can create balanced, healthier meals. The recipes have been inspired by the Planetary Health Diet, a guide developed by scientists to help a growing population eat well in a way that supports the health of both people and the planet.

The Planetary Health Diet is about making small, easy swaps that can be incorporated into everyday meals, such as:

  • Increase your plant-based protein, by adding more beans, pulses, and lentils to your staple meals.
  • Choose one wholegrain every day, whether that’s wholegrain bread, pasta, rice or other everyday staples.
  • Add a few more portions of fruit or vegetables, whether that’s in meals, snacks or on the go.
  • Keep the meals you love, but add more balance by including extra vegetables, wholegrains or plant-based protein.

Richard Bourns, Chief Commercial Officer at Lidl GB, said: “Our research shows people want to make healthier and more sustainable choices for the planet, but often affordability stands in the way. At Lidl GB, we’re breaking down those barriers by proving that market leading value can go hand-in-hand with making foods encouraged by the Planetary Health Diet more affordable and accessible. We’re supporting this ambition through year-round promotions, rewards and initiatives designed to make balanced choices more affordable.”

Miguel Barclay, chef and creator of the One Pound Meals series, said: “I’ve always believed that great food doesn’t have to come with a big price tag. The key is making the most of simple, affordable ingredients and knowing how to bring them together in a way that’s delicious and balanced. These £1 Planet Plate recipes show how little changes, such as adding more vegetables and beans, can be easy to create at home, without compromising on flavour or affordability.”

Lidl’s Live Well range includes a marker to help shoppers identify products that can support their health and the health of the planet. Customers can additionally benefit from the launch of Wellness Wednesdays, a new weekly initiative through Lidl Plus offering 10% off a product from the Live Well range every Wednesday (between 30 July and 2 September 2026).
