Stretch of busy Cardiff road closing to all traffic for more than a month

Disruption is expected in a part of the city

Motorists can expect delays in a part of Cardiff later this summer as a major route will be closed off to traffic for more than a month.

Cardiff council has confirmed a section of Bute Street, which connects the city centre with Cardiff Bay, will be closed to traffic from 7.30pm on Friday, July 24, so that roadworks can be carried out.

The closure will be in place for more than five weeks and run until September 1. For the latest Cardiff news sign up to our newsletter here.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times but there will be restrictions for motorists wanting to access other roads during the roadworks.

The below roads will be affected:

  • Bute Street between Maria Street and North Church Street will be closed to traffic
  • North Church Street will only be accessible from Callaghan Square
  • Maria Street will only be accessible from the southern end of Bute Street
  • Lane reductions in Callaghan Square remain in place
  • In addition there will be no vehicle access to North Church Street between 9pm on Friday, July 24, and 6am on Monday, July 27

The closure is to facilitate several utility diversion works in readiness for the up and coming Crossrail.

Cardiff Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused to motorists but insists the work is being done as quickly as possible in order to to minimise any disruption.
