This penny coin is considered the rarest in UK history – with it previously selling for £72,000 at auction. Experts always recommend for households to check their change

Check your change now as you could be sitting on a £72,000 fortune with this rare coin. Whether it’s a 50p coin that’s easy to find or the ‘holy grail’ 20p hiding away in your pocket, you never know when you’ve hit the jackpot.

There’s many benefits to finding rare coins at home – from financial profit to the thrill of discovering a huge piece of history. In the UK, some of the most notable circulating coins include the Kew Gardens 50p and the Atlantic Salmon 50p. Now it’s time to turn your attention to a coin from another era which can pocket you a staggering £72,000, if not more.

The 1933 George V penny is certainly worth discussing as collectors are desperate to get their hands on one. The only catch is – there are just six of these known to exist as they were produced largely for ceremonial purposes.

Since they weren’t released into circulation, it means finding one can be slightly hard – although nothing in life is impossible.

Instagram user @CoinCollectingWizard described the 1933 British penny as “one of the rarest coins in UK history”. He told his 37,200 followers: “The British Penny that could change your life overnight!

“Imagine finding a humble old penny in your change… only to discover it’s worth a fortune. That’s exactly the case with the legendary 1933 British penny – one of the rarest coins in UK history.”

He said if you manage to find one in your stash, you could be looking at hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction. However, there’s a slight downfall.

Since they’re so famous, it’s likely over the years replicas would have been made so there are far more fake ones out there.

The expert cautioned that since a vast number of fakes are out there – it’s essential to have your coin examined by a specialist.

He added: “The 1933 penny is the crown jewel of British coin collecting – but sadly, finding one in your change is like winning the lottery… twice.”

This highly sought-after coin, known as the 1933 George V penny, is estimated by experts to be worth around £72,000.

It’s rare because only a handful were ever produced and didn’t enter circulation, meaning they would not have been made available to the general public.

Some of these coins are described as “uniface”, meaning they feature a design on just one side, with the reverse left completely blank.

Key Errors To Look For In Rare Coins:

Identify the coin first: Ensure the piece is rare by looking at the date.

Scan for any errors or marks: Off-centre strikes, double-struck images, missing text or any mint marks can determine its value. Mint marks are tiny letters, and often not many error coins are produced which makes them sought-after.

Check the mintage: This is the total number of coins produced with that specific design and date. Lower mintage figures means a higher likelihood of rarity.

Verify and value: If you think your coin is rare and valuable, speak to a professional or visit an auction.
