DVLA announces four measures to tackle delays in medical driving licence renewals – what you need to know
- The DVLA has announced four changes to tackle a surge in driving licence renewals for people with medical conditions.
- Drivers with medical conditions are currently waiting an average of 62.3 working days — roughly three months — for a licensing decision, leaving some at risk of losing their ability to drive. Conditions such as diabetes, dementia and epilepsy need to be regularly assessed, say officials, to see if the condition is stable or has worsened.
- The four measures outlined by Justin Madders, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Transport, include a new text message alert trial, a new casework system, a new digital medical services portal, and the recruitment of additional staff.
- Mr Madders said: “These enhancements, alongside the recruitment of additional staff to deal with applications will deliver real improvements in services and turnaround times for customers.”
- More than two million of the UK’s 50 million licence holders have a medical condition recorded with the DVLA, with short-term medical licences issued for periods of one, two, three or five years.
