Vale of Glamorgan Council is awarded White Ribbon status

by David Jones

The accreditation recognises its commitment to preventing violence against women and girls and promoting a culture where everyone can live free from abuse, harassment and violence.

White Ribbon UK accreditation is given to organisations that show long-term commitment in ending men’s violence against women and girls through leadership, staff engagement and action planning.

Councillor Lis Burnett, leader of Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “We are delighted to have been reaccredited by White Ribbon UK.

“It is an important milestone and reflects our continued commitment to creating a safer, more respectful and more equal Vale for everyone.

“Violence against women and girls has no place in our society, and men and boys play an instrumental role in challenging the attitudes and stereotypes that enable violence to flourish.

“This accreditation is not the end of our journey.

“We remain committed to working with our communities and partners to build a culture where respect, equality and safety are at the heart of everything we do.”

To achieve accreditation, the council had to meet rigorous standards that demonstrate leadership, staff engagement and a strategic approach to preventing violence locally.

This has included supporting White Ribbon ambassadors and champions, raising awareness of the issues, promoting healthy relationships, and developing policies that foster safe environments across the Vale.

The White Ribbon has been an international symbol in the campaign against gender-based violence for 34 years, representing men’s responsibility to challenge harmful behaviours and attitudes.

Through this accreditation, the Vale of Glamorgan Council joins a network of organisations across the UK committed to tackling gender-based violence and challenging the cultures that allow it to persist.

By embedding these principles across its services, Vale of Glamorgan Council aims to not only respond to violence when it occurs but also to prevent it before it starts.
